Family caregiver · About 12 weeks
Two years into caring for a parent with a chronic condition, with every own-health appointment cancelled and a growing sense of numbness that had begun to frighten them.
Composite journey. This story is assembled from patterns our providers see repeatedly, not from one identifiable member. Details are illustrative.
The first session produced a written list of every recurring task in a week. Roughly a third genuinely required this person specifically. The rest had defaulted to them because they were closest, not because they were necessary.
Rather than asking for help in general, two entire recurring responsibilities were transferred permanently — the weekly pharmacy run and all insurance correspondence. Transferring the whole task moved the coordination too, which is where most invisible work sits.
Postponed appointments were booked before anything else was added to the calendar. A fixed, defended two-hour block each week was established and treated as non-negotiable.
Sessions moved to boundaries — how to decline additional tasks without a rupture, and how to have the conversation about paid respite care that had been avoided for a year.
Quick answers
Transfer whole recurring tasks rather than asking for help in general. A specific permanent handover — every pharmacy run, all insurance calls — moves the coordination as well as the task, which is the part that exhausts caregivers.
No, and capacity is finite. Caregivers who never restore their own health tend to reach a point where care becomes impossible to sustain at all, which serves nobody.

Treatment finishing is widely assumed to be the good part. For many people it is the point at which structure disappears, appointments stop, and nobody is checking in any more.
